The 40 Day TBC Life Devotion

Day 12

“Serve the Lord” (Romans 12:11c, ESV).

This is an important distinction to be made—we don’t serve the church, and we don’t serve people—We serve the Lord. This means that our service is an expression of worship—an indicator of how much we value Jesus.

Let’s go a little deeper with the word, “serve”. The Greek is “doulos” which literally means “slave”. A doulos serves his master, is obedient to his master, and yield’s his own will to his master. The New Testament does not teach nor does it consider the possibility of a true believer not obeying Jesus. It is not possible to say with a straight face, “No Lord!”. If we can say no, then He isn’t our Lord.

It’s Jesus who preaches, “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46).

“No one can rightfully lay claim to Him as Savior while refusing to own Him as Lord.” –John MacArthur

How would you explain service as obedience to Jesus? What is one way you can serve (obey) Him today?
