The 40 Day TBC Devotion

Day 36

“Let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother (Romans 14:13, ESV).

Our goal should be to help each other move further along in the kingdom of God. That said, it is possible to do the opposite and actually cause someone to stumble or trip. For example, someone might believe that there is nothing wrong with having a drink from time to time. And it’s true—there is no biblical prohibition. However, within our church are many who are recovering from alcohol addiction. Love would motivate us to not drink in front of someone who has had an issue with alcohol. It’s not about rights or even freedom—it’s about love.

Doing life together as a church means that we are always concerned with how our actions, our attitudes, and our arguments impact each other. We exist for the benefit of each other. “For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). Let’s together pursue whatever promotes righteousness, peace, and joy.

“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.” –Augustine (354-430).

Have you ever done or said something that diminished the faith of someone else? What in your life could the enemy use as a hindrance?
